A bilingual bonus
A bilingual bonus
Matthew Clancy, 23, is from Pittsburgh.
Question: I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. I majored in Spanish and have two certificates in Leadership and West European Studies. My entire time at Pitt I was told I would be a major hit in the job market with bilingual abilities and a background in leadership. My question is, where are all these Spanish-speaking jobs I was told about? Shouldn't there be a high demand for bilingual employees in this country? I can only find teaching and customer service...not exactly what I went to school for! --Matthew Clancy

Answer: According to our experts, geography is key here. Even if an opening doesn't specify language skills, candidates should look for companies that have a presence in Spanish-speaking markets, "so the benefit of having those language skills would be an asset," Safani said. Consider, "where the companies are that are trying to market their products and services to a Spanish speaking community," she said.

Robinson recommends looking on the east and west coasts, and specifically California, New York and Florida for starters. That's where there is more of a demand, she said.
