Power steering
The steering system had to work well -- high performance is the sled's main selling point -- and it had to be unique. "We needed to be able to patent it," Steve Luhr explains. "If a new product isn't unique enough, you can't find investors because competitors could just copy you."
Bob Worrell's solution -- a cantilevered leaf spring -- fits the bill on both counts. The flexible metal joint allows the front-runners to pivot around a central axis for sports car-like steering control.
