Winans wrote the Wall Street Journal's "Heard on the Street" column, which sometimes moved markets. The journalist allegedly decided to profit off of this by selling information on stocks to investment brokers before the column went to print. Winans was sentenced to 18 months in jail for misusing the Journal's information, but the SEC couldn't nail down a solid conviction of insider trading.
