This city on the edge of the Great Plains was a stop on the Chisholm Trail, with huge cattle drives coming up from Texas to connect with the railhead and on to eastern markets. Those industries offer well-paying jobs, which is reflected in Wichita's high median income. Home prices stayed steady through the long boom and house hunters have a wide choice of family homes of 2,200 square feet or more for less than $200,000.
