Savings: $2 million per year by letting patients use leftover medications.
Leftover medications distributed to patients in Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals are thrown away at the time of discharge. Patients then usually have to buy a refill for that same medicine at a pharmacy.
Now instead of chucking the leftover medicine, patients who need it could ... use it. That's the thrust of the proposal from the VA.
The VA says it is looking to re-label about 300 medications so that patients can take their medicine with them when they leave the hospital.
