And potentially boosting passenger rail traffic
Proponents of the high-speed rail line in Wisconsin wanted to build on the popularity of Amtrak's Hiawatha Service.

Seven round trips are made between Chicago and Milwaukee each day. It's the most used Amtrak line in the Midwest.

In fiscal 2010, 783,000 road the Hiawatha Service, a 6.1% increase over the previous year. Wisconsin's Department of Transportation projected that over 1.8 million would ride the new trains in 2013.

Incoming governor Scott Walker doubted the projections, calling them "woefully optimistic."
