Apparently Chevy Chase can rest easy now -- no more name competition. It's not clear why a company would want to kill off a nickname associated with classic Americana -- an ad campaign in 2006 associated the auto giant with apple pie and baseball -- but on June 8, Chevrolet sent its employees a corporate memo asking that they not refer to the company by its shorthand. "Whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends... Communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward," instructed the letter.
The memo was inevitably leaked to various news sites, and the request baffled motorists. GM issued a statement that said the memo wasn't for broad use, just employees, but we'd bet that most are still using the verboten term. Strangest of all, the memo also revealed that a jar was set up in the Detroit corporate HQ offices, its purpose being for staffers to drop a quarter in when they slip up and say "Chevy." Really?
