After Deng Xiaoping introduced market-based economic reforms in 1978, he chose Shenzhen, then a fishing village near Hong Kong, as the nation's first special economic zone. Thirty years later the city has the highest GDP per capita in China ($13,581), with a hot real estate market and a sophisticated financial services sector.
