Ningbo's leadership resisted some of the Mao era's economic policies, allowing it to keep an entrepreneurial streak uncommon in China. The city is a leader in garment and industrial machinery production, with a 2009 GDP of $61.7 billion, and it relies more on domestic private investment than other Chinese cities. It also has a vibrant financial trading sector.
