On average, a man spends one year in assisted living (women spend four), and barely a third of long-term care claims are paid to men. Be cautious before spending thousands on this coverage.
If you can afford the average $80,000 a year cost for a nursing home for a year or two, it might be better to forgo this insurance, says Garry. Or spend less on a policy by electing a longer waiting period or taking a shared care rider, which pools benefits with a spouse.
