Retirement: Fly solo for a while
Nearly 40% of husbands urge their wives to retire when they do (vs. 21% of women), largely because men are typically older than their spouses and quit working first. But shared sunsets come at a hefty price.
If your wife stays on the job just a few more years, you may be able to put off tapping your savings or at least draw down at a slower rate; you may retain access to health insurance before you or your wife is eligible for Medicare; and you and your spouse may be able to postpone claiming Social Security, which will result in higher benefits down the road.
