American Apparel
Headquarters: Los Angeles, California
Products: Basic clothing and accessories
Started in 1989, American Apparel's never been shy about its "all-American" philosophy. It makes and sells all of its products in the United States. It's also one of the few companies exporting "Made in USA" clothing. Ironically, founder Dov Charney is Canadian.

After 21-years as a truly American enterprise, the company recently warned it could go out of business soon because of a steep sales slump, serious manufacturing issues and mounting financial problems.

"Made in USA" is a key selling point for the company but, "it's not a formula that's proven to be working in today's world," said Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst with NPD Group.

Cash-strapped shoppers aren't looking for labels, they're looking for savings. That's especially true of young shoppers, Cohen says. So when choosing between a $20 tee at American Apparel or an identical one for $5 at Target or Wal-Mart, they're going for the bargain, he said.
