This painting of Zenas Crane hangs in the Crane Paper Museum in Dalton, Mass.
The old methods and traditions of paper-making were passed down the generations from father to son.
Zenas Crane, who founded Crane & Co. in the early 1800s, was the fourth son in a paper-making family. His father, Stephen Crane, took over one of the first paper mills in Massachusetts in 1770 and named it the Liberty Paper Mill.
