Karan's purpose-built taxi concept had a rear facing seat that folded out of the way for wheelchair access. "Universal access" was one of the city's requirements for this competition.
Unfortunately, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg pointed to Karsan's last-minute proposal to put a factory in Brooklyn as proof of how ill-prepared the Turkish carmaker was to do business in the Big Apple. The mayor joked he couldn't even get a school built in Brooklyn in that time, let alone a whole new factory.
