The Beetle's suspension is firm but it also has a strange Flubber-like tendency to bounce around, accentuating impacts. Go too fast over a nasty bump and you feel as if you're about to be tossed right through the panoramic sunroof. (Maybe it's a good thing the impressively huge sunroof opens only a small way.)
The steering, is heavy but offers little real feedback. In a fast turn, the Beetle feels skittish and strangely unsettled, like it's not sure it really cares to go where you're trying to take it.
The brakes, likewise, have a vague, uneasy feel. "You sure you want to stop here? How about up here, a little further?"
This three-door coupe asks buyers to sacrifice for a sporty look that's not backed up by performance.
