The Beetle might not be a lost cause. With a better base engine, some suspension tuning, a little work on the brake feel, it might someday be turned into a good car. But it's certainly not there yet. (VW is already planning on changing the base engine before long.)
For now, the end of my week with this Bug just left me wanting to call the Orkin man.
