The U.S. discount retailer thrived during the recession under Sasser's leadership but could face headwinds if economic conditions improve and customers start trading up to fancier stores. For now Dollar Tree continues to attract cash-strapped U.S. consumers to its chain of 4,000 stores, where essentially all products sell for a dollar. Over the past year, sales and profits rose by 12.7% and 31%, respectively. Going forward, Dollar Tree faces stiff competition from the likes of Family Dollar and Dollar General Stores, not to mention the mighty Wal-Mart.
