The inexpensive 2006 Hyundai Sonata has a five-star "crash safety" rating, but that's not all: It also boasts electronic stability control (ESC), which helps drivers avoid skidding during maneuvers or on slick roads.
In separate studies by the federal government and the insurance industry, ESC has also been found to reduce the risk of a fatal crash by as much as a third. ESC is common on new cars but hard to find on older used models.
