San Antonio may bring to mind grainy images of Davy Crockett and the old South -- but it's very much a modern metropolis. The second-largest city in Texas, San Antonio is the seventh-largest in the country, and growing.
A military hub, the home of the Alamo also houses the thriving financial services company USAA, which caters to the military population. Its other Fortune 500 residents are Valero Energy, Tesoro, and Clear Channel Communications. With some help from those corporate strongholds, San Antonio proved remarkably resilient through the financial crisis. Along with Houston, it was one of only a handful of cities in the country that recorded three quarters of consecutive job growth in 2010, and it gained back more than a quarter of the jobs it lost between its pre-recession high and its post-bust low, according to Brookings Institution research.
