"We're a pretty large company now, so innovation is very important to our growth," he said.
PayNearMe, which rolls out into 7-Eleven stores this year, is one example, he said. It's a service that allows consumers with no credit or debit cards to pay bills and make purchases online.
First, consumers make an online purchase with a PayNearMe partner store. Next, they take a barcode for that purchase -- either printed on a slip or on their smartphones -- to a 7-Eleven store where they pay the amount in cash.
7-Eleven said the service will also allow consumers to transfer money to 130 counties.
"30% of the U.S. population doesn't have credit cards or a bank account. This lets them still shop online, and we get more consumers coming into our stores," said DePinto.
