"My situation is a little unique because I have a National Health Service Corp scholarship. That helps to pay part of my tuition for every year I spend serving in a physician shortage area.
"For me, treating people after understanding their medical history and where they're coming from is hugely important. Family medicine allows us to do that and to follow up on patients.
"Health reform is helping to change attitude toward primary care. A lot has to do with the monetary incentives and loan forgiveness programs.
"The traditional model of medicine is the solo doctor practice. That's why there's so much doctor burnout. The medical home model that the government is testing takes that pressure off because it encourages a team-based approach to care."
