Alliant is one of the largest credit unions in the United States. And while it's located in Illinois, anyone can join, no matter where they live.
"If you want a brick-and-mortar bank in the area, that would be the downside of Alliant," said Ken Tumin, founder of Depositaccounts.com. "But besides that it's a great option. There's high-rate checking, no monthly fees and it's part of a really big ATM network."
Alliant offers a checking account with no monthly service fee and no minimum balance requirement. While the basic free checking account doesn't pay interest automatically, you can easily earn a high APY of 1.10% on your checking account if you opt out of paper statements and make at least one monthly electronic deposit.
Customers are also granted access to a network of more than 80,000 ATMs across the country to use without charge.
