Unlike regular fixed-income funds, the Guggenheim Bulletshares series of target-maturity ETFs, launched last June, holds select high-quality corporate issues until their end date.
This strategy ensures that you'll get your principal back, assuming no defaults on the bonds the ETF holds, as long as you don't cash out before maturity. No regular mutual fund can say that. What's more, you get easy diversification at a reasonable cost (the funds' expense ratio is 0.24%).
There are seven Bulletshares funds so far, with end dates ranging from 2011 (BSCB) to 2017 (BSCH). That variety makes them "ideal for building a corporate-bond portfolio with varying maturities," says Morningstar analyst Scott Burns.
