Savings: 30% and up
Upside: With white-sand beaches and jaw-dropping resorts, the Bahamas is considered a top spot for honeymooners, as well as for families on vacation. But it's rarely considered cheap. During Christmas and New Year's -- prime travel season -- a stay at the popular Atlantis Paradise Island will set you back about $580 a night. Still, those who book before July 11 can secure a room for $400 a night with the fourth night free, plus free breakfasts and all kids meals free for children under 11 in addition to a $250 airfare credit.
Downside: Summer is hurricane season and that means rain and high winds, or even more severe weather, could affect your trip. Some restaurants may also be closed during this period in order to gear up for the high season, so it's worth calling ahead if there's a spot where you are particularly interested in dining.
Like the Griswolds, Americans are ready to hit the road for their summer vacation.
