DIY home guide: Spring
How to protect the value of your property, cut energy costs, avoid costly repairs, and spiff up your surroundings this spring.
Cost: $100 to $250
If your gutters and down-spouts are clogged with leaves, twigs, and other muck, water can leak into the eaves, causing thousands in damage.
So slip on rubber gloves, grab a hose, and get cleaning. If water doesn't drain freely while you're working, dislodge the blockage in the downspout with the hose. Also, check that the gutters are fastened tightly to the house.
If you live in a two-story home, leave this cleaning job to a pro, says David Tamny president of David Tamny, president of the American Society of Home Inspectors.
