In 1992, she started Ida, an indie rock band, which produced three albums over six years.
She also sang back up for Lisa Loeb's 1994 hit single Stay (I Missed You).
But she didn't hit her stride until 1998, when she decided to record some kids songs she had made up as a nursery school teacher in 1990.
The recordings were supposed to be a gift for friends and family who had children.
But they became so popular that Mitchell was inspired to put out the album You Are My Flower, which was a hit with parents.
In the following years, three other albums followed: You Are My Sunshine, You Are My Little Bird (2006) and Sunny Day (2010), which features her daughter, Storey, and husband, Daniel Littleton.
Ida is still near and dear, said Mitchell, but her venture into kids music has been her biggest success.
