With a family tree full of tailors and seamstresses, Alexandra and Kristen O'Neill's vocational paths were mapped out at a pretty early age. "Although we have no formal training, we always knew that our career track would be in fashion," said Kristen.
The sisters decided to launch Porter Grey in the fall of 2006. Alexandra and Kristen were both Art History majors, studying at NYU and Harvard, respectively. And while their classmates were chasing the hottest designer trends, the O'Neills sought to build a collection of classic pieces that were both well-made and timeless.
Five years later, Alexandra and Kristen have built a thriving business and landed their second consecutive spot at Fashion Week. They chose to grow organically, keeping their collections small and slowly expanding each season.
As a result, they've retained full ownership and creative control over the fashion line named after their great-grandmother -- a budding empire that they may one day pass down to future generations.
