Many middle-aged adults are left responsible for the care of at least one aging parent at some point in their lives. And because the costs of senior care can devastate families, Barbara Steinberg created BLS Eldercare Financial Solutions in February 2009 as "the affordable alternative to elder law attorneys."
The company experienced its share of early growing pains, particularly in offering too many services and expanding too quickly. Today, Steinberg's strategy for success is using a flat-fee structure to help clients with full financial planning and analysis, as well as the preparation of Medicaid and Veterans benefits applications.
Steinberg also believes her baby boomer status has been an asset and helped her better relate to customers. Most of her clients are in their 80s or 90s, and she often works directly with their children who are around her age.
All in all, the experience has been rewarding, she said. "There's no end date or retirement in my plans," she said. "I want to work, and I need to work."
