Microcontroller company Atmel had a stellar 2010, and so did CEO Steven Laub.

Shares of the company nearly tripled, as the smartphone and tablet boom led to an increase in demand for the company's products like touch screens and Flash memory.

As a result, Laub received a $1.9 million cash bonus and $16.7 million in stock -- more than double his compensation in 2009.

But that's not all: Laub also took home an additional $500 as part of a company-wide performance bonus. On top of his $742,223 salary, he had a nice payday.
