Nothing ages faster than a design that is superficially attractive but functionally empty. Think padded vinyl roofs from the 1980s or chrome side strakes on some of today's cars. The FJ Cruiser was either a high point or a low ebb -- depending on your point of view -- in retro styling from usually stolid Toyota. Either way it hasn't aged well. 2012 sales are running at about a quarter of the rate when the FJ was introduced in 2006. Any plans to extend its life span or terminate it are closely held.
