The European side of Carlos Ghosn's Franco-Japanese alliance dragged down both companies in 2011 and a clear way back isn't visible yet. It doesn't help that a payoff from the big bet on electric cars remains way off in the future. Ghosn is never at a loss for ideas, however, so watch this space. One of his options may be taking on a third partner for the alliance.
