When I first moved to Xi'an with my husband and my daughter in 1999, transportation in the city was very inconvenient. Buses were the only option and private-owned cars were rarely seen. We had to travel two stops away from home for daily necessities. Shopping in a supermarket was even a luxury at that time.

Outside of the ancient city wall was the second "ring road," where nobody would want to live. It was considered too remote. But even so, we bought a two-bedroom condo in the area.

With Xi'an's significant improvement in economy and infrastructure, the city has undergone a dramatic transformation. Roads are much wider, private cars are ubiquitous and have caused massive traffic problems, and people are accustomed to shopping in big stores. In the meantime, new apartment buildings are being built and subways are running in the city.
