Philips' winning design

From cushy, blood-red headphones to MRI scanners, here are the products that have earned Philips a coveted spot among Apple and BMW in the design world.

Sean Carney, the new Chief Design Officer of Royal Philips Electronics, takes on the role of bringing design to the C-suite in a new way for the company. In the past, the Philips Design division operated as an internal design agency. As of January 1, 2012, Carney will help oversee how design is integrated into business strategy across all of Philips. It's an intriguing proposition for a company long known for its strong design team -- which won 99 major international design awards in 2011, a record for Philips.

Here's a sampling of these winners (designed under the guidance of departing CDO, Stefano Marzano), which illustrate Philips' sleek, yet sensible, signature style that Carney says he will build upon and push in new "alternative paths" to profitable innovation.
