You are looking at a loser. This car raced six times during the 1967 Can-Am season and it fared poorly. The blame probably can't be given to its driver, Mario Andretti. It's not like he never won any races.
The car also had serious thoroughbred DNA. Many members of its design team had worked on the hugely successful Ford (F) GT40 racecar. The whole project was led by Holman Moody, the engine specialist who led Ford's Nascar racing efforts. Somehow, none of this helped.
The car did manage to attract the backing of movie star and racer Paul Newman, whose name appears prominently on its nose and who become a lifelong friend of Andretti's. (The two later teamed up successfully for a 1984 CART Championship.) And, at auction, it's expected to attract between $240,000 and $280,000.
