On the eve of a slew of earnings this week, U.S. stocks and the economy can't seem to catch a break.
One good sign is that consumer stocks are doing well this year. American spending makes up two-thirds of the U.S. economy. Consumer discretionary stocks in the S&P 500 -- including Amazon (AMZN) and McDonald's (MCD) for example -- are up 7.4% this year.
The Census Bureau announces retail sales for September on Wednesday and we will get a better sense of the health of the consumer.
