Some guys should stay retired. Jack Welch badly tarnished his reputation with an Oct. 5 Twitter rant following the release of the monthly jobs report.
It was just a month before the presidential election and the numbers were pretty good. Welch's take: "Unbelievable jobs numbers...these Chicago guys will do anything...can't debate so change numbers."
Even conservative economists defended the civil servants at the Bureau of Labor Statistics who compile the numbers.
But Welch, acknowledging on CNN that he "can't prove" that anybody changed numbers, said he was "standing by" his Tweet, suggesting only that he wished he'd added a "?" -- Chris Isidore
