The first of the celebrated "Century Series" fighters and fighter-bombers, the North American F-100 Super Sabre appeared at Paris in 1957 -- calling attention to the first U.S. Air Force operational airplane designed to travel faster than the speed of sound during level flight.
Shown here in a file photo, the F-100 was meant to carry nuclear weapons, if necessary. It was largely used as a conventional fighter-bomber during the Vietnam War.
