1995: The wonderfully weird Beluga

paris air show

Its official name was the A300-600 Super Transporter. But this whale of a plane, which appeared at Paris in 1995, was later dubbed the Beluga.

There's a reason for its bizarre shape: The Beluga transports some of the world's largest aircraft parts and equipment. It's big enough to carry both wings or fuselage sections of a huge twin-aisle A350 XWB.

An even larger plane called BelugaXL is in the works and is expected to fly as soon as next year.
