Rubbish piled up in London's Leicester Square during one of the decade's many strikes.

The 1970s were a miserable time. Strikes, power outages, and unemployment were the order of the day. Britain joined Europe's economic community but almost immediately was plunged into recession by the global oil shock of 1974.

Two years later the government was forced to take a bailout from the International Monetary Fund, in return for deep austerity.
