Unlike some of the other big-box and department stores, Macy's stuck to a midnight opening for Black Friday this year.
CEO Terry Lundgren said the rush was at record levels but didn't bring pandemonium.
At the flagship store in midtown Manhattan, the event appeared to be more about the festivities and decorations than bargain hunting.
Everywhere else, though, it was all about $20 Rampage boots, 40%-off coffeemakers and other deals. Lundgren said he saw many customers go straight for Justin Bieber perfumes. Aside from offering free headphones with a $75 purchase of fragrances, stores offered 20%-50% off on select items.
Unlike other retailers, Macy's Black Friday deals are extended through Saturday.
