Stressful jobs that pay badly

For veterinary assistants, drug counselors and sous chefs, a day on the job involves a whole lot of stress ... and not a lot of pay. Here are 15 of the most overworked and underpaid professions, according to PayScale.

Retail jobs are notoriously stressful, and the role of retail shift supervisor is no exception.

These supervisors are responsible for opening or closing a store, and managing the staff and inventory during a given shift.

They also have to know about any new promotions the store is running, be prepared to answer questions about merchandise and make sure that displays are neat and organized.

That all takes a backseat, however, if a customer comes in with a problem.

By the time a customer asks to speak with the manager on duty, that customer may already be frustrated with the response he or she has received from another employee. It's the retail shift supervisor's job to make sure that frustration ends there.

"In customer service, you have to have a smile on your face," says Jeff Jupiter, a shift supervisor at GameStop in Bethlehem, Pa. If you become irritated with guests, "that's a bad experience for them," he adds.
