retire your way norbert adame
  • Name(s): Norbert Adame
  • Age(s): 59
  • Now lives in: Phoenix, Arizona

Norbert Adame may not be busy saving people's lives in the emergency room anymore, but he's keeping himself busy doing a whole range of other activities.

The former ER doctor, who retired at the age of 59 last year, now teaches biology at Gateway Community College in Phoenix, coaches health care executives about time management and leadership skills, writes books and trains for marathons.

Not that Adame needs to work. He saved up more than $1.1 million in his 401(k) by maxing out his annual contributions. Throughout his career, he always saved an extra 10% to 20% of his income on top of his employer contributions.

In addition, he managed his own money -- a decision he made 17 years ago that he estimates has saved him some $10,000 in management fees.

"I subscribed to the Harvard Business Review and I'd read about investing at night," he said. "It didn't take much time to learn about, because it was something I wanted to do."
