The population of this Austin suburb, about 28,000 in 2000, is expected to nearly double by 2010 -- which explains the many new subdivisions here.

But there's history too. Local businesses are concentrated in the square around the old county courthouse, a part of town with several Victorian gingerbread homes and prized live oak trees.

Georgetown is a popular place to retire (there's a Sun City development just west of downtown) and to get educated (Southwestern University, a small liberal arts school, is just to the east). --N.A.
