While much of Florida has been battered by the economic downturn and declining property values, this town 15 miles north of Orlando is one of the luckier ones. It hasn’t cut most town services and hasn’t raised property taxes. Tech is big in the area: major employers include Siemens, Lockheed Martin, and the University of Central Florida. Winter Springs doesn’t have a very cohesive community yet, but the city is trying to fix that with a town center combining apartments with offices, restaurants, and a park. A typical four-bedroom home here cost about $200,000 in mid-2011. --A.W.
