This biosciences hub offers plenty of opportunities for people who want to work in their own neighborhood. In fact, more people work in this city 15 miles south of Kansas City than live here--but the town doesn’t come close to emptying out every evening. Lenexa’s population has grown by 20% in the last decade. A cute downtown and abundance of community gatherings make the place popular for families. Among the most popular events: the annual Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle, one of the biggest in the country, where judges taste brisket and ribs to crown the official Kansas State Champion. --A.W.
