Twenty miles from downtown Dallas, Murphy is a boom town: Its population has exploded from a few thousand to nearly 20,000 in just a decade’s time. One big draw: Homes that are more affordable than many in the area. Murphy provides commuters easy access to the city while serving as a quiet retreat. However, fast growth doesn’t come without problems. For example, Murphy lacks its own school district. Most residents' children attend the nearby Plano schools, which lay claim to having one of the best music education programs in the country. --D.B.
