NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Do you find skateboarding boring? Has spinning spun out? Does the thought of Pilates fill you with ennui?

Don't sweat it -- there will soon be a new fad for you to take up.

For hard-working Americans, leisure time may be in short supply, but there's no dearth of activities to fill them. And lately there seems to have been an outbreak of creativity in the field.

Ideas for these activities may come from anywhere; often they are elaborations of simple games or sports you played as a kid. Look how cops-and-robbers morphed into paintball.

Others took some kind of leap of imagination to conjure up, like Dr. James Naismith's invention of basketball more or less from scratch.

Some seem to derive from the desire to push the envelope by making comparatively safe sports more and more extreme.

Whatever the source of their inspiration, there's probably a new form of recreation that appeals to every taste.
