NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Toyota unveiled designs for a production version of the FJ Cruiser sport/utility vehicle first shown as a concept car two years ago. The new SUV was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show Wednesday.

The final production design was a joint project of Toyota along with Calty Design Research which developed the original concept version. That version was shown at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The FJ Cruiser is based on a modified version of the Toyota 4Runner platform. It will have a 275-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. It will be available in both 2- and 4-wheel drive versions. A six-speed manual transmission will be offered on 4-wheel drive models.

In addition to its two doors, the FJ Cruiser will also have rear access doors for back-seat passengers. Rear seats will fold flat to maximize cargo room. Adding to its old-fashioned styling, the FJ Cruiser will have body-color trim on its instrument panel.

The FJ Cruiser is scheduled to go on sale in early 2006 as a 2007 model.  Top of page
