NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - W. Mark Felt, better known as "Deep Throat," has sold book and film rights to his life story for undisclosed sums to PublicAffairs and Universal Pictures, the companies said Thursday.

Felt, a former FBI official, revealed last month in an article in Vanity Fair magazine that he was the secret source for Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward during the Watergate investigation.

A spokesman for publisher PublicAffairs told CNN that it bought the book rights to Felt's life story for an undisclosed sum. The book's working title is "A G-Man's Life: The FBI, Being 'Deep Throat,' and the Struggle for Honor in Washington."

The book will be published early next spring, the publisher said in a statement.

Felt, a long-time senior figure at the FBI, published a now-out-of-print memoir in 1979. PublicAffairs said the new book will combine unused material from that book with letters and personal memos.

Accounts from family members will also be included, along with material written by John O'Connor, the lawyer who wrote the Vanity Fair article that revealed Felt's identity, the publisher said.

"The opportunity to work with the Felt family in creating a record of Mark Felt's role in one of the most important moments in American history and securing his legacy is a great thrill," PublicAffairs publisher and CEO Peter Osnos said in a statement. "We are very proud to have been chosen do this book."

Osnos was a reporter and editor at The Washington Post for almost 20 years.

Separately, Universal Pictures said the studio bought the film rights to Felt's story along with Playtone, a production company owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman.

Universal said it bought the rights of Felt and his family, as well as those of O'Connor, for an undisclosed sum.

Hanks and Goetzman will produce the film, the studio said.
