NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Looks like rock star Lenny Kravitz has had a change of heart about American women: Instead of telling them to "stay away from me," he now wants to clothe them with his own fashion line, according to a report published Wednesday.

The New York Post, citing sources familiar with the matter, said the musician, who famously recorded a version of the Guess Who's 1970 chart-topping classic "American Woman," is close to signing a women's clothing deal.

The move would plunge Kravitz, known for his eclectic personal style, into an increasingly crowded field of celebrity designers that includes Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani and Sean "P Diddy" Combs, among others, the newspaper said.

In the years since his 1989 debut album "Let Love Rule" made him an instant celebrity, Kravitz has become known as much for his fashion sense as for his way with a guitar, the newspaper said.

According to the Post, Kravitz recently turned his love of interior design into a business with the establishment of Kravitz Design, a Miami-based firm that counts private homes, recording studios and hotels among its clients.

The Post said a spokeswoman for Kravitz declined to comment on the story.  Top of page
